Melges Trifecta Triumphs At Charleston Race Week 2010
12 April 2010
Considered the biggest multi-class regatta in the South, Charleston Race Week 2010 entertained more than 1,500 sailors for a grand total of 191 entries last weekend. Sixty-five teams in all sailed on one of three classes of Melges sportboats, the largest manufacturer represented.
Proving that it’s stronger than ever, big fleet racing is very much intact within the Melges 24 fleet as it was the largest in attendance at 31. Bora Gulari on Flying Elvis edged out Charleston local David Dabney on Conejo Racing for the title. Big breeze conditions led to three heated days of battle and for the most part, Gulari commanded by a substantial margin. In fact, he appeared almost unmatched. The final day brought out the best in the fleet with Dabney finishing with an equal amount of points to Gulari. With 34 points a piece, Gulari won the tiebreaker and the trophy with an impressive three-bullets-out-of-ten performance. Dabney was second and Travis Weisleder aboard LayLine finished third overall.
