Robles Pulls Ahead On Day Three To Lead Open Orange Bowl Regatta

30 December 2011

Article by Matt Pistay - Day 3 of the 2011 Open Orange Bowl regatta held by the Coconut Grove Sailing Club, started with warm weather and a nice little breeze from the north east. But as competitors were launching and heading out to the race course, the wind faded away quickly and found sailors drifting around Biscayne Bay for a little over an hour before the race committee put up postponement on shore.

With waiting on shore and playing some soccer for 2 hours, a solid 5-6 knot southeasterly had filled in and sailors headed for the race course. First race was scheduled for 3pm. Race one got underway with Zack Downing and Andrew Cates taking an early lead out on the right side of the course. But nipping at their heels was ESP's Carlos Robles. In the end, USA's Zack Downing and Andrew Cates took the win.

Just before the second and final race of the afternoon, the wind had shifted right and PRO Ron Rostorfer had his team re-setting the course. Soon after, Race 2 was off with a group of boats going left and another group of boats going right. It turned out that the left side paid off with ESP's Carlos Robles leading around the top mark followed closely by USA's Zack Downing. At the finish it was ESP's Carlos Robles and SWE's Johanna Sommarlund to take first and second with Downing finishing 3rd.

Friday will be the final day of racing at the 2011 Open Orange Bowl Regatta.
