Robles/Trittel Claim 2011 29er Open Orange Bowl Regatta Championship Title

3 January 2012

Article by Matt Pistay - Congratulations to Spain's Carlos Robles and Florian Trittel as they won the 2011 Open Orange Bowl Regatta Championship by a substantial margin. Sweden's Johanna Sommerlund and Marcus Anjemark finished in second, and USA's Judge Ryan and Hans Henken came third.

The final day of racing at the 2011 Open Orange Bowl Regatta, hosted by Coconut Grove Sailing Club was beautiful on Biscayne Bay as racers made their way out to the race course for the 1030 warning which ended up being delayed by 45 minutes.

Race one finally got underway in a shifty 5-6 knot nor'easter. Robles was quick to take an early lead to claim the win with Sommerlund finishing second.

The wind held its position steady for the start of Race 2. Tyler MacDonald and Mike Deady had a hot start off the pin end of the line, then tacked, crossing the fleet, but it was Ryan that reached the top mark first and continued to extend his lead for the win. Robles maintained an even strain to finish second.

For the final race of the day and event, the wind diminished, prompting PRO Ron Rostorfer to shorten the course at the second weather mark. Again, it was Robles out front with an early lead, extending for the win followed closely by USA's Daniel Goldman.

The 25-strong fleet enjoyed four days of great racing on Biscayne Bay. Every sailor, regardless of class were always mixing it up.

Melges USA also had a great time supporting this event and thoroughly enjoyed assisting customers with parts, service and a some coaching here and there. Melges has committed to supporting this event again next year! Keep up the great sailing and hope to see all of you on the water in 2012!
