JAPAN SAILING FEDERATION OFFICIALLY RECOGNISES MELGES 24 CLASS
November 2002
06 November 2002 - 6 NOVEMBER 2002 - Japanese Class Secretary
Chiaki Obata has received official confirmation from the Japan
Sailing Federation that the Japan Melges 24 Class Association
has become a recognised national class association. This recognition
is an important step forward for the Melges 24 in Japan and will
assist in encouraging new owners to join the class.
The Japanese fleet has continued to grow steadily in recent years
and has established a regular regatta series and national championships.
Although only a small fleet the standard is very high as Kunio
Suzuiki and his Siesta team demonstrated when they competed in
the 2001 Worlds in Key West where they made the top twenty and
put in several excellent performances.
Chiaki and his team are working hard to ensure the fleet continues
to grow and we look forward to reporting further news from Japan
and to welcoming more Japanese competitors at future World and
Continental Championships.
AUSTRALIAN LIVING IN SAN
FRANCISCO....mad about MELGES
When Richard Leslie bought his new Melges 24 to race in the US he
shipped his beloved "Matilda" to his hometown of Brisbane, which
allowed him to fly out and compete with his brother Bruce in the St
Helena Cup. He recently took out the Albert Simpson Trophy in
San Fran, with his symbolic Southern Cross Spinnaker.
Richard was so impressed with his Melges 24 he also
purchased AUS 162, to take on the challenges the Melges 32 offers
competing in the San Francisco Big Boat Series.
Richard can't get enough of the amazing rides and One design
Racing these boats offer and is looking forward to racing in both
countries, as lead up to the Melges 24 Worlds in Sardinia in May 08.
Richard is extremely motivated to assist to developing Melges
classes in Australia. |
